The youth from across the world need to address climate change and global warming, said Governor of Maharashtra Ramesh Bais addressing a convocation ceremony held for international students at Symbiosis International in Lavale on Tuesday.

“You are not only the citizens of your own country but you are world citizens and as citizens of the world you should be aware of the problems faced by the world like global warming and climate change,” urged Bais while delivering a speech where 85 students from 26 different countries were conferred their degrees.

“As time progresses these problems will become more serious and will create challenges to the survival of mankind and hence we must protect our mother earth,” he stressed. “You are not just citizens of one country; you are citizens of the world. Embrace this global perspective in your endeavours.”

Speaking about innovation and entrepreneurship, Bais said, “Don’t be a job seeker, be a job creator. Take the leap into entrepreneurship and create opportunities not only for yourselves but for others as well. The world needs innovative startups and businesses that can generate employment and drive economic growth.”

SB Mujumdar, Founder and President of Symbiosis also urged students to remember Pune after going back to their countries with their learning and degrees.

In his speech, Governor Bais reminisced about Pune’s transformation over the last 30 years, from a modest city to an IT hub creating thousands of jobs. At the same time he also called for participation in the public sector. “While entrepreneurship is vital, the public sector also needs bright minds to drive change,” he said.

Bais stressed the significance of thinking beyond personal gains and considering the needs of the less fortunate. “Think about the poor and hungry people, the people stuck in warzones, it’s essential to build organisations that are not just profit-oriented but also serve the community. Think of how your ventures can provide for those in need and make a positive impact on society,” he said.

“It is admirable to see Symbiosis making education accessible to women globally, even in places like Afghanistan. Let the light of knowledge spread to the nook and corner of the world,” he concluded.
