Glass apart

There are book launches and then there are book launches. But this one surely takes the cake for its sheer ‘out of the ordinary’ conceptualisation.

There are book launches and then there are book launches. But this one surely takes the cake for its sheer ‘out of the ordinary’ conceptualisation. We are talking about the book reading of I Am Another You by Priya Kumar at Landmark bookstore,Camp on Saturday evening. Here, the motivational speaker and corporate trainer also conducted the glass walk – an exercise in which you walk barefoot on pieces of broken glass – post the reading session of her debut work. Recently selected for the Frankfurt Book Fair,Kumar’s novel,in her own words,is ‘a story of breakthroughs; powerful,life-changing breakthroughs.’ “There are some stories that everyone relates to and this is one such story. Everyone is hurting in some situation or the other, whether it’s a broken relationship, insecure work environment, lack of support from family or even deceit on part of those you trusted. Everyone is seeking answers to a better life. Everyone is seeking their purpose and their direction,” reveals the petite lady in her mid-30s. She claims that her book can help many people realise their true purpose in life.

“There are numerous places in the book where you find yourself stopping, drawing parallels to your own life and finding answers,” says Kumar,a corporate trainer by profession, who weaves her learning into each chapter, subtly, observing the meaning behind every experience, pointing it out to the reader without being obvious. Elaborating about inclusion of the glass walk exercise in the book reading session,Kumar says the single most powerful barrier to success is fear. “One needs to understand that the past does not equal the future. Past failures or apprehensions often interfere with our creative edges. When the participants walk barefoot on glass, the idea is that if the goal is big,so must be the level of belief and commitment. Without commitment, success is wishful thinking and that’s why, equipped with this awareness, when you walk barefoot over glass shards,it does not hurt,” she asserts.

With chapters in the novel curiously titled The Sweat Lodge,The Salt Cleanse,The Drummer’s Edge,The Spiritual Walk and The Firewalk Discovery,Kumar sure knows how to arrest a potential reader’s attention. “My maiden work is a book of many lessons, many insights and many truths; it has the power to awaken you to your best self,” promises Kumar. “This book will urge you to take that path you always knew was right but never had the courage to follow. It will guide you, humour you, inspire you, touch you and above all, lead you to your life’s calling,” she adds, before signing off,to do her own version of the glass walk, while promoting her book in cities across the country.
