As first phase of Pune Metro gets complete, ridership jumps by 25% in September

Pune Metro generated a total revenue of Rs 7.06 crore in September, with an average daily revenue of Rs 23.56 lakh, according to officials.

pune metroIn a proposal tabled in the civic standing committee, municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale said the Maha-Metro has sought approval for construction of a metro station at Balaji Nagar on Swargate-Katraj underground route.

The Pune Metro experienced a significant 25 per cent surge in ridership in September from the previous month as the period coincided with the commencement of service from Civil Court to Swargate and the Ganesh festival, according to officials.

In August 2024, the daily ridership stood at over 1.18 lakh. However, this number grew by over 25 per cent in September, with the average daily ridership reaching 1,53,971 passengers. The total ridership for September was recorded at 46,19,130. Pune Metro generated a total revenue of Rs 7.06 crore in September, with an average daily revenue of Rs 23.56 lakh.

Maha Metro managing director Shravan Hardikar stated, “A significant increase of over 25 per cent in daily ridership was observed in September 2024. Citizens showed great preference for the metro during the Ganeshotsav festival. The underground corridor from Civil Court to Swargate became operational, enabling direct travel from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate. This has successfully connected the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, offering passengers substantial benefits by reducing their travel time.”

“Of the total ridership, 35 per cent of commuters used the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate corridor, while 65 per cent travelled on the Ramwadi to Vanaz corridor,” said a Pune Metro officer.

Regarding ticketing, 74.71 per cent of passengers opted for digital payment methods, while only 25.29 per cent used cash.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Pune Metro corridor from District Court to Swargate on September 29. This marked the completion of Phase 1 of Pune Metro, which includes the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi corridors.
