The fire brigade on Saturday averted a major mishap by preventing two gas cylinders from exploding at a building near Hamzekhan chowk in Ganesh Peth area on Saturday,where a fire broke out in the afternoon.

Some workers were making gold jewellery when the fire broke out,fire brigade officials said. The workers rushed out in fear.

On receiving information from local residents,a fire brigade team reached the spot along with three fire tenders and water tankers. They continuously directed a stream of water on and around the two LPG cylinders in the apartment to prevent them from bursting. Soon,the fire was brought under control. The fire damaged the furniture and a worker received minor injuries. A police team from Ganesh Peth Chowki also visited the spot. Police said the apartment is owned by former corporator Riyaz Pailwan and was taken on rent by two persons who had employed workers for making gold ornaments there.

Chief fire officer Prashant Ranpise,station officers Vijay Bhillare,Gajanan Pathrudkar,assistant divisional officer Dattatrya Nagalkar and firemen Mohammed Shaikh,Nilesh Mahajan,Laxman Ghavali,Datta Gaikwad and others took part in the operation.
