Mumbai gets ready for a big-ticket art extravaganza, the India Art Festival
The financial Capital is packed with art lovers and galleries galore; the only thing missing was a suitably big-ticket art festival where one could view as well as buy serious art. The India Art Festival is attempting to plug that gap. Art events are taking place all over the world, but there was no such initiative in Mumbai, says Festival secretary Rajendra Patil. To be held at the Nehru Centre in Worli from November 17 to 20,the India Art Festival will, therefore, mark the first festival of its kind in the city.
Wall Hangers
Over 40 galleries and 400 artists are participating in the festival. Spread over 26,000 feet, the Festival will unfold over two floors. The ground floor will host galleries displaying the Masters, while the first floor will have works of artists who arent represented by any gallery. A number of talented artists havent been recognised because they havent been lucky enough to be picked up by a gallery, says Patil. The galleries participating in the Fetsival include Chemould Prescott Road from Mumbai; Akar Prakar from Kolkata; Archer Art Gallery and Nexus Arts from Ahmedabad; Galerie Sara Arakkal and Time and Space from Bangalore,Gallery Espace from Delhi; and The Gallery Gnani Arts from Singapore.
Behind the Scenes
The India Art Festival packs in the punch of several venerable members of the countrys art world. While Patil is editor of the magazine,Indian Contemporary Art Journal,President of the Festival,Dr Saryu Doshi is an eminent art historian. Artist Prafulla Dahanukar is the Chairperson, and Anupa Mehta of The Loft,Mumbai,is the Advisor.
Footnote
Besides the obvious lure of visiting, seeing and buying some great works of art,the festival also holds other attractions. Over the three days,Nehru Centre will host poetry recitations and film screenings. Those who enjoy the outdoors can participate in art walks and catch a street performance.
