A 55-year-old woman and her daughter 25-year-old daughter were sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder of Sheetal Mene in 2008. Twentythree-year-old Sheetal in her dying declaration had accused the two her mother-in-law Kashabai Baban Mene and sister-in-law Vaishali Mene of harassing her for dowry.
After marrying Dilip Baban Mene on February 10,2008,Sheetal was staying with the Mene family in Kusgaon,Lonavala. Even before a month into marriage,Sheeta complained of harassment by her in-laws for dowry. She told her parents that her in-laws asked for a five gram gold ring and Rs 50,000 for buying a motorcycle. Her parents said they would give the same in installments.
However,on October 24,2008,Sheetal was set on fire. Dilip informed her brother Sachin Ramchandra Katkar (29),a resident of Aundh gaon, that Sheetal had tried to commit suicide and was admitted to a local hospital in Lonavala. She was later shifted to the Sassoon General Hospital. Sheetal gave a dying declaration to the police, that Kashabai and Vaishali had set her on fire.
Katkar filed a police complaint accusing his sisters in-laws for her death. During the court proceedings, the complainant (Katkar) and other witnesses turned hostile. However, the court gave the judgement solely on the basis of Sheetals dying declaration, said Additional Public Prosecutor Asif Basit.
He said the other accused Baban Dagdu Mene (60),Dilip Baban Mene (32) and Dinesh Baban Mene (25) were released due to lack of evidence against them.
