Around 1,500 students of three different institutes of Symbiosis International University (SIU) on Tuesday held demonstration at the varsitys Lavale campus, demanding explanation from the management regarding the death of a second-year student of Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management (SITM) on Monday.
After the students alleged that Nitin Bhavarkar did not get medical aid in time, the Symbiosis management decided to investigate the matter. Nitin died of a massive heart attack during a presentation on Monday morning. Students of three institutes – SITM,Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management – did not attend classes on Tuesday. They presented a 15-point charter of demands to the management.
According to a student of SIMC who did not wish to be named, the students unanimously decided not to attend classes on Tuesday. Some issues were also raised about the medical facilities available on the campus and we demanded a detailed explanation on what exactly happened to Nitin, he said.
Students of SITM claimed that when Nitin collapsed they immediately called the ambulance, but it took more than 30 minutes to reach the spot. When the ambulance was on the campus, why did it reach late, the students said. Students have demanded compensation for Nitins family. Students also claimed that no faculty member attended the condolence meeting held on the campus on Monday night.
Few students also claimed that the management did not allow Nitins parents to see his room in the hostel.
The students demanded better medical facilities at the campus since it is far from the city. Three doctors are supposed to be on the campus. But only one is available at any given time, said another student.
Rajiv Yerawadekar, director of the Symbioisis Centre of Healthcare, said they would investigate if there was a delay in providing immediate medical aid to Nitin. Though the medical staff said they arrived on the spot immediately, students denied it. Since there is discrepancy between both the claims,SIU will initiate investigation into the matter, he said.
