Cops arrest 9 robbers

The Crime Branch sleuths on Friday arrested a nine-member gang that used to loot people on their way from banks. Police said the arrested hailed from Gujarat and had been involved in 25 similar crimes in the city and outside in the past three years.

A tip-off to the crime branch said nine persons were planning a similar operation outside the Khadki branch of Union Bank of India on Aundh Road and they were travelling in a Tavera car. The gang members were nabbed by the police at the junction near the egg hatching centre at Khadki.

Cash prizes have been announced for police inspector Sunil Pawar and assistant police inspector Shaukat Ali Sayyad who led the operation. Anant Shinde,additional commissioner of police (crime),said,“Their modus operandi was peculiar. Some of them used to keep a watch on people coming out of banks and give tips to their accomplices outside. They used to either steal the bag; or puncture the tyre of the person’s vehicle and take away the money while the puncture is being fixed.”

The gang members were produced in the court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till October 11. The arrested were identified as Uttam Tamanche (31) of Kubernagar,Ahmedabad,Jayeshkumar Tamanche (28),Nitin Tamanche (32),Madhyam Gagdekar (23),Sunil Indarekar (45),Pankaj Macharekar (30),Gurukumar Gagdekar (30),Deepak Bajarange (35) and Munna Rathod (40),of Gujarat.

The police have recovered Rs 74,000,sharp weapons,tools and a map from them. Three bikes,including one stolen,have also been seized.

Shinde added,“We are checking the bank accounts of these persons as part of investigations. We are also in touch with police from the other states for details of crimes committed by the gang.”

The police are also collating data about crimes committed by the gang in Pune rural jurisdiction,Sangli,Satara,Kolhapur,Jalgaon,Nashik,Nandurbar,Thane and Navi Mumbai. They have requested public to report similar incidents to police inspector Sunil Pawar at 26208388.
