A serving police sub-inspector was arrested earlier this week, nearly nine years after he allegedly appeared as a dummy candidate in his brother’s place for a Maharashtra Police recruitment examination in Pune.

A First Information Report (FIR) in this case was lodged at the Bibwewadi Police Station in Pune city in 2016.

The police have identified the accused as Suppadsingh Shivlal Gusinge, a native of Ambad taluka in Jalna district of Maharashtra. The police said Suppadsingh and his brother, Gajanan Shivlal Gusinge, allegedly conspired and prepared forged identity documents, which Suppadsingh allegedly carried while appearing as a dummy candidate for his brother.

According to the police, Gajanan appeared for the physical tests conducted as a part of the police recruitment procedure held at the Shivajinagar police headquarters in Pune on April 6, 2016. But, Suppadsingh appeared in his place for the written examination held on April 24, 2016.

After the cheating came to light, an offence was initially registered against Gajanan under sections 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471, 472, and 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and under sections of the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board and Other Examinations Act, 1982.

During their investigation, the police obtained the video of the candidates who had appeared for the written examination. A probe into this video revealed that the person who appeared as a dummy in place of Gajanan Gusinge was his brother, Suppadsingh.

Meanwhile, Suppadsingh cleared the police recruitment examination, and joined the Maharashtra Police as a sub-inspector in 2023. He is currently posted with the Pimpri Chinchwad police.

A team of Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Pune city police, which is investigating the case, arrested Suppadsingh from the premises of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) in Daund on December 1. The next day, a team of Dadasaheb Patil, Assistant Police Inspector, EOW, produced the accused before a court in Pune.

The police informed the court that Gajanan and the dummy candidate were not traceable since the offence was reported. They said Suppadsingh was arrested after they gathered information from confidential sources about his role in the said offence.

The court remanded the accused, Suppadsingh, to police custody for three days.

The police said attempts were underway to arrest his brother, Gajanan, in connection with the case.
