Contribute your bit for animals, adopt them

Here’s a chance for those fascinated with wild animals but unable to make any contribution in doing something for their protection.

Here’s a chance for those fascinated with wild animals but unable to make any contribution in doing something for their protection. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has come up with an adoption scheme for animals at Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj where citizens can adopt animals for a day, month, year, three years, five years or life time.

Among the top with highest charges for adoption is tiger with an annual fee of Rs 49,27,500 followed by nilgaay with Rs 21,90,000 and an elephant with Rs 18,25,000.

“Many citizens are fond of wild animals but cannot frequently visit the forests to fulfill their wish. Thus, the civic body has decided to launch the adoption of the animals in the zoological park,” said municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade in a proposal tabled in the standing committee.

There are 16 species of wild animals in the zoological park which sees around 3,000 visitors daily and 15,000 on holidays. The adoption scheme has been a success in Mysore,Lucknow,Hyderabad and Delhi.

“The adoption scheme is also being implemented by the PMC wherein any individual, family, school, institution or corporate house can adopt an animal in the zoo for a particular timeframe after paying the charges,” he said.

Those adopting the animals will be given a certificate along with photos of the animal. The name of those adopting would be put up on the board outside the cage of the animal and the charges will be tax free. “Those adopting the animal can avail rebate in Income Tax under 80G,” it said.

Though those adopting will not be allowed to touch the animal or enter the premises, the proposal said the person will have free access to zoo along with 10 individuals till the time period of adoption. The adoption money will be used to provide food and health facilities to the animal.
