Civic body to investigate deaths in sewer line

Vijay Ramlal Verma (35) and a labourer Vijay Sastanand Jha died of suffocation while cleaning a drainage line near Magarapatta in Hadapsar.

A day after a sanitary works contractor Vijay Ramlal Verma (35) and a labourer Vijay Sastanand Jha died of suffocation while cleaning a drainage line near Magarapatta in Hadapsar, officials from Pune Municipal Corporation said that an inquiry will be ordered to find out who had undertaken the work.

Civic body officials had said on Wednesday that they had not asked the contractor to clean the drain and that the private party might have been involved.

The two victims had died of suffocation after they entered the 18 feet deep sewer line on Wednesday morning. Senior police inspector with Hadapsar police,Pandharinath Mandhare, said,“We had written to the PMC ward officer to inform us who had undertaken the work. They have told us that the work was done by a private person and have asked us to register an offence against unidentified person under Bombay Provincial Municipal Act.” Police have now written back to the civic body to tell them the section under which a case could be registered.

Madhav Jagtap, the ward officer for Hadapsar ward said,“We will initiate an inquiry into who had done the work. We will be asking the road department and building permission department to investigate the matter. Meanwhile,we have asked police to file a case.”
