‘Observe fast for peace in Syria’

Responding to the appeal by Pope Francis,Rt Rev Thomas Dabre,Bishop of Poona,has appealed to churches and schools across the city to observe September 7 as a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria. A statement issued by Rev Fr Malcolm Sequeira,Director of Social Communication,Diocese of Poona,said Pope Francis has called Christians and followers of other religions to a worldwide day of fasting.

Rs 1.80 lakh donated for free MRIs at Sassoon

Sassoon General Hospital on Friday received a donation of Rs 1.80 lakh from Rajeev Goenka,owner of Laxmi Organic Industry,to conduct MRI tests of 200 patients free-of-cost. Presently,the government hospital charges Rs 1,600-Rs 1,800 for an MRI test. The hospital has also received Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 from Yogesh Kundur and Arvind Dekhne respectively for conducting free MRIs. Dr Ajay Chandawale,Dean,B J Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital appealed to people to come forward and donate for a charitable cause.

Doctors protest attack on Dhule medico

Doctors associated with People’s Health Forum staged a demonstrations at the District Collectorate on Friday against the attack on Dr Parag Deore,a Dhule-based medico. A statement issued by Dr Shekhar Bendre,Coordinator of the People’s Health Forum,said 20-25 people allegedly attacked Deore on September 4. The statement alleged people accompanying a patient had protested against Deore’s absence at the hospital. Bendre,while submitting a memorandum of demands to the district collector,said the increasing attacks on doctors should be condemned.

Two mandal members held for trying to extort money from shop owner

Shivajinagar police have arrested two members of a Ganesh mandal for allegedly trying to extort money from a shop owner for the festival. Police said the suspects also vandalised the shop of the victim. Shrikant Dange of Deep Bangala Chowk lodged a complaint. Police have arrested Chetan Mane and Sagar Koradkar of Akhil Vadarwadi Ganesh Mandal and have also booked their two accomplices Ravi Sinnur and Ganesh Mane. Police said after Dange refused to give money they vandalised his shop,causing a damage of Rs 10,000. PSI S K Kengale is probing the case.
