Two one-act Marathi plays by students of the Fergusson college will explore the city’s social divisions.

Famed Marathi playwright Satish Alekar wrote the play Zulta Pul (Hanging Bridge) in 1969-1970,while he was in Fergusson College (FC). The play went on to win the Purushottam Karandak inter-collegiate theatre fest that year, and has for the past four decades, continued to intrigue and inspire students of the college. On Tuesday,May 8,a theatre group from FC will present an adaptation of Zulta Pul at Sudarshan Rangmanch, starting 7pm.

“The play comments on social divisions, the two economic classes in the city,” says Anuja Vartak, the director of the latest Zulta Pul production. Alekar, through conversations between a boy from the so-called lower social strata and a girl from a well-to-do background, tries to establish the two distinct divisions in Pune city. He shows the differences in lifestyle, sensibilities and social responses between the more traditional outposts of the Peth areas, and the more urbane and glitzy areas like Kothrud,Aundh,et al. “In the city, the river (the Mula-Mutha) is the dividing factor. The areas on both sides of the river have become culturally divided,” says Vartak.

Zulta Pul makes no aggressive statements about the social divide, but instead relies on everyday symbols to establish the gap. So the male protagonist talks of not having a refrigerator at home, about how his mother does all the household chores, and a life in a chawl, while the lead actress lives in a bungalow where servants abound. The FC team has stuck to the original script, but has added some contemporary elements like live music to the narrative.

On the same day,FC students will present another Marathi play called Gaadi. Written by Pradeep Vaiddya and directed by Sagar Pandhare,it delves in to the troubled mind of a young man who has lost his job and struggles to communicate his feelings. The whole play transpires in the course of a night at a railway station.
