With 73 per cent of the population of Pune below 40 years of age,the city is among leading ones in the country with a large youth. The finding is part of a survey by Karve Institute of Social Service,to act as a reference for preparation of the new Development Plan (DP).
It indicates that 32.68 per cent of the population is below 20 while 40.23 per cent is between 20 and 40.
The survey states that in 56 per cent households, members range from two and four while 41 per cent has more than 5 members. The average family size is 4.2. Though, there is an influx of population, the survey mentions that it’s mostly from other parts of Maharashtra than other states as the mother tongue in 85 per cent households is Marathi while communication is in Hindi in 7.67 per cent households. Other dominant groups are people speaking Bengali,Kannada and Rajasthani.
Architect Rajiv Raje said that the demographic survey should be well reflected in the new DP to cater to the needs of citizens. “The 73 per cent young population means the PMC should make adequate provisions for sports, entertainment and educational institutes,” he said.
However,Raje expressed concern over the slow process of preparing the DP. “The preparation and actual implementation of the DP takes more time. The socio-economic situation changes by the time the civic body carries out development.”
