Dr Mashelkar elected to American Academy

Scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar has been elected as a foreign member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) for 2011. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences,established in 1780 by its founding members such as Benjamin Franklin and George Washington,has elected only six Indians so far as its foreign members. The election of Mashelkar (former Director of NCL,Pune and Director General,CSIR) this year follows Ratan Tata’s election last year as a foreign member of AAAS. The Academy has more than 200 Nobel Prize winners as its fellows. The foreign members of the Academy include Charles Darwin,Albert Einstein,Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.

PMPML bus kills another pedestrian

A speeding Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus knocked down a person near Kumbharves Chowk in Kasba Peth on Monday afternoon. The body of the deceased pedestrian was not identified till reports last came in. The police arrested the PMPML bus driver Chandrakant Arun Gavande (40) of Bopodi for negligent and rash driving. Police said bus was going towards Pune Railway station when it hit the pedestrian near the chowk.
