Karthik Naik wins Eco-petition
Karthik Naik from Gurukul School bagged the first place in Henkel India Limiteds Henkel Eco-petition,a national-level competition for schoolchildren on environmental issues. Karthik was given the Henkel Enviro Care Award and cash prize worth Rs 10,000 for his paper on How to Save Water. According to a press release,each entry was judged on novelty and practicality of the idea and thought process.
Youth to youth website launched
MP Supriya Sule and state Youth Welfare Minister Bhaskar Jadhav recently launched the web portal http://www.youthtoyouth.in of Youth to Youth,a city-based organisation working on various social issues. A unique feature of the website is an online forum Intellection Online,where youths can discuss various social issues. The Young Edge,a monthly e-newsletter by Youth to Youth,was also inaugurated on the occasion.
Award for Jangamwad
The state-level Triratna award,given in memory of Mahatma Phule,Shahu Maharaj and Annabhau Sathe,was presented to Pune Universitys Public Relations Officer Gangadhar Jangamwad and his wife Kiran Jangamwad recently. The award is instituted by Mahatma Phule Mahujan Mahasangh and Savitribai Phule Grihaudyog Sanstha. Jangamwad has been the UoP PRO for about 32 years.
Gold medal for Patil
A Pune University student Avinash Patil was recently conferred the Late Suryakant Chotu Gokhale Gold Medal for MA in tabla playing. Dr Arun Adsool,acting V-C,presented the medal in the convocation of the university held recently. Pandit Umesh Moghe and Pramod Patil trained Avinash to play the instrument.
River bank cleaned
Nearly 150 students of Dr B N College of Architecture cleaned the bank of Mutha river behind Sabhaji Park last week. The activity was a part of the annual gathering to promote environmental awareness. The students collected over 50 bags full of garbage. Professor Purva Keskar guided the activity.
Republic Day parade
Akshay Shendge and Shivani Deshpande,students of Abhinav Education Societys English Medium School and Junior College,Ambegaon,were selected to participate in the Republic Day parade to be held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on January 26. This is the fourt consecutive year that students from this school have been selected for the state parade. According a press note,these are the only two students from the state in junior college section for the parade.
Conference on instrumentation
Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sansthas Cummins College of Engineering for Women is organising the international conference on instrumentation from January 21-23. The topic of the conference is automation for the future. The aim of the conference is to bring constructive suggestions and understanding among researchers,engineers and users. The conference is expected to attract over 400 researchers,scientists from various research organisations like DRDO,CSIR experts from industries,users,faculty and students.
Papers on various related topics would be presented during the conference. Talks by eminent personalities on instrumentation have been organised. The event is expected to be a grandiose with the support of industries like Forbes Marshall,Emerson Exports,Rosemount Tank Gaging System.
Farhad Forbes,Director Forbes Marshall,Pune and Prof RS Sirohi,President Instrument Society of India will inaugurate the function. Dr PS Nair,ex-satellite director ISRO,will deliver satish Dhawan Memorial Lecture. The recipient of the ISOI Award will be an eminent personality in the field of instrumentation. Around 250 research papers will be presented and 12 lectures will be conducted.
Canara Bank union strike
Canara Bank staff union will stage their protest in front of the banks circle office on Laxmi Road on January 21. The employees are protesting against non-fulfillment of their long-pending demands that include- regularising employees,recruitment of staff,out of turn transfers as well as redressal of CBS grievances and improving welfare schemes.
The workers in their release have stated that the legitimate demands of the employees are not being met. The administration is undemocratic and insensitive to our demands, said Vishwas Jadhav,secretary of the union.
