Caribbean Calling

Adding an Indian element to the third edition of Tobago Fashion Weekend 2013 (TFW) were leading luxury swimwear designers Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja,better known as Shivan & Narresh. Held from May 17 to 19 at Tobago,the smaller of the two main islands that make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,TFW is an international event that clubs tourism and fashion. Shivan & Narresh presented their Spring-Summer 2013 collection titled “Zip”. Taking forward the artistic language of abstract expressionist Barnett Newman,the collection converses with his ideology of colour fields and the use of hued zips to define spatial structures. Iconic works across Newman’s lifespan as an artist are given form in the collective ensemble,which includes swimsuits in a pop-inspired colour palette. Mixing cherry reds,aquamarines and chocolate browns,Newman’s bold zips have been translated into hand-painted linens,forming the canvas for the collection.

In a New Role

Last year saw Sridevi make a successful comeback on the big screen. Ever since her return,the actor has been in the spotlight and her sartorial choices,especially those on the red carpet,haven’t gone unnoticed. So it wasn’t going to be long for an endorsement to come her way. The actor is now the new face of Tanishq in the state of Tamil Nadu. Sridevi will be seen showcasing the brand’s latest collection of gold jewellery. She will also star in a TV campaign for Tanishq,speaking diverse dialects of the southern state. The fact that the campaign has been directed by Gauri Shinde,who directed English Vinglish,comes as no surprise. But seeing Sridevi pair traditional jewellery with a chiffon sari and not a kanjeevaram certainly is.
