Cantonment boards identify houses in risk zone

Gearing up to meet any eventuality during the monsoon,the cantonment boards in the city have started a survey to identify the houses in risk zones. The boards have also initiated works to clean up the nullahs and drains in their areas to prevent submergence.

Officials of the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) said they have started the survey to identify houses which are in the danger zone and weak. According to KCB officials,these houses may collapse or may be damaged during the monsoon.

They said notices are being issued to those living in these houses so that they can shift to some other places.

In other two cantonments of Pune and Dehu Road,the nullah-cleaning work and road repair works are progressing in full swing. The boards are also laying water drainage lines in the cantonment areas.

KCB health superintendent Vilas Khandode said the survey to identify tweak houses is going on and that the notices are being issued to residents asking them to vacate these buildings.

He said the drainage lines have been cleaned to prevent any water stagnation during monsoon. “We have also undertaken a drive to spray waste oil on the water puddles on the roads and other places in the cantonment to curb mosquito larval breeding,” he said.

In the Pune cantonment,officials have issued tenders to repair the lanes and drains and are carrying out the construction of the water harvesting lines.

“We have cleared the nullahs and even issued the tenders for repair of drains in the cantonment area. We have also identified areas including the housing colonies and other residential buildings which are in need of water harvesting lines,” said PCB vice-president Manzoor Nazir Sheikh.

The Dehu Road Cantonment Board will also start the work on cleansing of its nullahas and wants to complete the work on its roads ahead of the rainy season. “We will start the cleansing work of our nullahs shortly. Around three nullahave been choked and we are clearing them,” said DCB spokesperson N M Mahajani. He said road repair works are being carried out and it would cost around Rs 2.2 crore.

“Most of the work on the internal roads has been completed. We intend to carry out the road repair work in our bazaar. The total length of road we are covering is nearly 40 km,” he said.
