A 22-year-old employee of a call centre in Pune who had gone to Bhushi Dam for a picnic died of drowning on Sunday morning.

The Lonavala Town police said Nakul Subhash Bagait, the deceased, was from Gwalior and currently stayed in Vimannagar. He had gone to the Bhushi Dam reservoir on Sunday morning along with a group of more than ten friends.

The call centre where he worked is in Vimannagar.

A D Acharya, the officer investigating the case, said: “We have come to know that after the group reached there, seven to eight of them entered the waters. Bagait and one of his friends went deeper and started drowning. As others in the group raised an alarm, some of the local residents rescued the friend but could not trace Bagait.”

His body was fished out sometime later.

Acharya said Bagait’s family had been informed. “A post-mortem will be carried out after the family members arrive here,” he added.

Police said there were no permanent lifeguards at the reservoir in spite of thousands of people visiting the place every day in rainy season.

With the first major spell of monsoon rain lashing Lonavala, police said,a long queue of vehicles of visitors could be seen heading to the dam throughout Sunday.
