“The bull signifies strength, power and hard work,” says sculptor Pritam Deshmukh.

“The bull signifies strength, power and hard work,” says sculptor Pritam Deshmukh. A preview show of his sculptures, which are inspired by the bull,is being held as part of TAIN evenings, organised by TAIN real estate developers and Art2day Gallery,Camp till October 22. “This animal is one of the most important aspects of Indian agriculture. It tirelessly ploughs the fields and the nation reaps its benefits,” he adds.

Deshmukh comes from a family of farmers. “All through my childhood,I was fascinated by the hard work and perseverance of the bulls in our farms,” he says. The show has 35 sculptures on display. Each is a contemporary depiction of the domestic animal. “My collection is a tribute to the bull,” says

Deshmukh. Each piece is carved out of a whole stone. It is first carved into a basic shape by stone workers and then handed over to Deshmukh to work his magic. “The finishing and polishing is very tedious and time consuming. An artist might get physically frustrated but never mentally tired. In fact, when a sculptor is working on his piece for a long time,he gets new ideas and is inspired to do more,” explains Deshmukh, who usually takes a month and a half to complete each piece.

Having completed a sculpture diploma from Bharatiya Vidyapeeth,Pune,in 2005,Deshmukh started his career as a commercial artist. “I needed to express my creativity and talent to the society. After a year,I quit my job as a commercial artist. It gave me freedom to explore myself as an artist,” he says. The 31-year-old sculptor has displayed his works at various exhibitions and art shows in Pune and Mumbai but this is his first exhibition on a larger scale. “My collection ranges from 2×2 to10 inches by 10 inches and the pieces are priced between Rs 40,000 and 1,20,000,” informs Deshmukh.

(The show is on at Art2Day Gallery,Camp till October 22)
