Naach Dance Academy’s unique annual show will combine salsa, hip hop, zumba, bachata, bhangra and spirited merrymaking
Could you imagine what would we be born like if not from a human being but from a huge jam box? The students of Naach Dance Academy have an answer to it. We would dance forever, perhaps, sums up 30- year-old,Abhilasha Mahant, the founder of Naach who has been a dancer all her life.
Mahant was working in the corporate sector for the past five years. Inspite of having a professional degree in Kathak, she had been pursuing dance as a hobby, until a year and a half earlier when she opened a dance academy herself. She quit her regular nine to five job to invest in something which was required to be started from the scratch. I wanted to come out of the comfort zone of the corporate life and do something which would interest me. I was bored with the monthly salary and the plastic life, says Mahant.
The annual show by the academy – Born From a Boom Box will witness the corporates dancing to the salsa tunes. It will showcase a wide style of dance forms including salsa, hip hop, zumba, bachata, bhangra, reuda and our very own Bollywood. Born from a Boom Box will be a stage show where our loved ones will become a part of our dancing world, gushes Mahant. The annual show is inspired by the film Step Up 3 and people will witness the best of performances when the boom box explodes, adds Mahant.
Naach has been engaged in teaching children from the slums as well. These voluntary workshops are conducted once in a week at the NGO,Grace Foundation,Ghorpadi. Dance brings happiness to all. So why will the lesser privileged children be deprived from the same, feels Mahant. Naach had also organised a Salsa Marathon at a city based mall to collect cash, clothes and stationary for HIV positive children.
The annual performance will be held on August 28 at the Karnatak High school Auditorium
