Photographer and painter Nirmala Savadekar has learnt to shed inhibitions and splash her feelings on the canvas.
I photograph whatever I cant paint and I paint whatever I cant photograph a line etched in Nirmala Savadekars subconscious mind has become a reflection of her life. A freelance photographer for many years,Savadekar says she had read the line a couple of years ago and kept pondering over it till she finally decided to join the Osho International Meditation Resort for art therapy. There, she learnt to shed her inhibitions about painting and open her heart to the canvas. I was always inclined towards painting. I had a good hand at drawing when I was a child, but my talent in that field was not honed. I got busy with studies and then took up photography as a career. I never took professional training for painting,so I did not have confidence that I could do justice to the canvas, says Savadeker, who is showcasing her first solo exhibition Trails of Happiness at Sangrah Art Plaza.
The 58-year-old says, she finds bliss when she puts on an apron and works on her paintings in her studio.
In Trails of Happiness, she is exhibiting 46 paintings that are divided into two categories. The first category has paintings with distinct forms that were done before she experienced art therapy and the second category is of formless paintings with myriad vibrant colours. My teacher Meera taught me a very important lesson that not only applies to art,but to life as well to listen to your heart and clear your mind. As cliched as it may sound, many people fail to apply this in life,so they remain unhappy. Once you let go of your inhibitions and splash the colours of your feelings on canvas, you will end up with a beautiful work of art, says Savadekar. Inspired by art therapy, her paintings explore the theme of being in a no-mind space, where the artist must clear his or her mind and reach a state of bliss while filling the canvas with colours.
Most of the time, when we paint,we think of the past or the future. Art therapy taught me to fix myself in the present and paint according to my feelings at that point in time. This is why most of the paintings are formless,as they represent feelings and emotions that are intangible, says she. Even though she has found her ground in painting, the camera remains her first love. Savadekar says she often goes between her two distinct and different passions. I paint to create something of my own and I photograph so that I can add my perspective to what is already present in the world, she says.
The exhibition is on at Sangrah Art Plaza,Deep Banglow Chowk, till March 10.
