BJP youth wing office bearer attacked, loses thumb; 2 held

Police have booked nine people on the charges of attempt to murder and have also invoked against them the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

A 29-year-old office bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) lost a thumb after he was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons by a group of around nine people who also allegedly hurled casteist slur at him in Pune’s Lohia Nagar on Sunday evening, said the Pune police adding that two of the nine accused have been arrested.

An FIR was registered at Khadak police station in connection with the attack on Akshay Datta Dhaware, a resident of Ganj Peth area who is an office bearer of the BJYM for the Kasba Peth assembly constituency, by his brother Nagesh (21).

Police have booked nine people on the charges of attempt to murder and have also invoked against them the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Of those booked, two suspects, identified as Yusuf Khan and Salman Shaikh, were arrested on Monday.

Senior inspector Ravindra Gaikwad confirmed the arrest. Three more of the remaining seven accused have been identified as Sultan Shaikh, Aslam Patel and Asif Shaikh.

“Probe revealed that Dhaware and his friends were having tea at an eatery in Lohiya Nagar area. A group of miscreants approached him and hurled casteist slur at him. They charged onto him brandishing sharp weapons. Akshay tried to resist the first blow with his right hand and lost a thumb. The suspects attacked him on his waist and back and fled the spot on bikes,” said an officer from Khadak police station.
