The Catholic Church announced 2025 as “Jubilee Year”, a church tradition that occurs every 25 years, with the theme “pilgrims of hope” which was chosen by Pope Francis.

On Sunday, the “Jubilee Year” in Pune started with a rally from the St. Anthony Shrine in Camp to St. Patrick’s Cathedral which was attended a large number of people.

“The last Jubilee year was in 2000, and now, in 2025, we have this year. It is a special time of grace, God’s grace for the Church and for all its members,” said Bishop John Rodrigues.

The Jubilee Year will involve various religious services, including prayers and pilgrimages. Bishop John Rodrigues announced that special sites, like St. Anthony Shrine and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, will be designated for the followers to visit as part of their pilgrimage.

“People can make individual visits or attend Masses to experience the blessings of the Jubilee year,” he said.

Throughout the year, various activities will focus on different groups, as Pope Francis highlighted eight signs of hope.

These include peace in the world, protection of life, care for the elderly, youth, migrants, prisoners, and the sick.

“We will organise programmes focusing on each of these groups, offering support and prayers to those in need,” said the Bishop.

Bishop Rodrigues also emphasised the role of the family during the Jubilee year, noting the challenges faced by families today.

He spoke about the importance of living out the values of love, sharing, and generosity, particularly within family life.

“Today is the Feast of the Holy Family, and we must encourage families to strengthen their bonds, despite the pressures they face,” he said.

In his final remarks, the Bishop extended an invitation to non-Catholics to join in the spirit of the Jubilee Year.

“We welcome people of all faiths to join us in working for peace, caring for the elderly, the youth, and those in need. This is a time for collaboration and unity, and we invite all people of goodwill to walk with us,” he said.
