In a bid to promote interaction between various language departments, the University of Pune (UoP) is considering setting up a Bhasha Bhavan in the varsity campus. The Bhasha Bhavan will house Marathi,Hindi,Sanskrit and English departments with state-of-the-art facilities.

A proposal to set up Marathi Bhavan was sent by the Marathi department to the UoP administration two years back. “The then vice-chancellor of the varsity Narendra Jadhav had had suggested that instead of setting up only one Marathi Bhavan, the varsity should have a Bhasha Bhavan that will house all the language departments and encourage interaction between students and faculty of the departments,” said Manohar Jadhav, head of the Marathi department.

“The interaction will give a boost to joint research opportunities and help in conservation of languages.

We can also conduct seminars on various issues of signifance to language studies,” added Jadhav.

Arun Adsool, who took charge as the acting vice-chancellor after Narendra Jadhav, had placed the proposal before the management council of the varsity.

“The proposal was discussed in a management council meeting and welcomed by members,” said Adsool.

“According to the comprehensive proposal, the Bhasha Bhavan will have an independent building that will house a linguistic laboratory,a museum and an inclusive library with books of all languages. It will also have a state-of-the-art auditorium for seminars and lectures,” he said.

Jadhav added that they have forwarded the proposal to the present vice-chancellor R K Shevgaonkar and he has responded positively.

Meanwhile, executive engineer of the UoP R V Patil said that it will take some time to start work on the proposed Bhasha Bhavan building.

“We are in process of getting some permissions after which we will start work. The architecture of Bhasha Bhavan will be exclusive,” he said.

Project tied in red tape
Though the idea has been welcomed in the varsity, there are many hurdles before the project. “Though the land records department has already measured the land in the campus in November 2009,the varsity is yet to receive the report even after rigorous follow ups. The varsity can submit the layout and building plan to the town planning department of the PMC only after finalisation of the report.” said executive engineer of the UoP R V Patil .
