The appropriate meaning of realism,is the fusion of two words — research and journalism. And literally abiding by the books that define journalism as the fourth pillar of democracy,Unique Features,a city-based publication house have been successfully performing their role of a watchdog for the past 18 years.

Suhas Kulkarni,editor-director,Unique Features and News Pvt Ltd categorises his publication as a balance between not getting caught in the rat race of mainstream media and ineffectiveness of parallel media.. Established in 1991 by a group of four individuals,of whom only Anand Avdhani and Kulkarni still remain partners,Unique Features,in his own words has been ‘looking at the world without any preconceived notions’. “We started by working with all the leading newspapers in the state. In fact, with Loksatta,we did a series titled- Lokajagar holding the corporators responsible for misdeeds in their wards. Other than that we did a number of stories with other leading dailies,” adds Kulkarni. In 1994,the group took over Anubhav,a monthly magazine then run by Mumbai-based organisation- Yuva.

Explaining their work style,Kulkarni explains,“We do not want to simplify the situations and put it across to our readers in the language they understand. If the social, political, economical or any other conditions for that matter are complex,we portray them in similarly researched language- even if that means more word count or space.”

Defying the stream of those complaining about thinning number of ‘good individuals’ in the society,Anubhav carried a series of interviews of various personalities working towards exceptional social cause. One of the issues titled- Kharekhure Idols (real idols) featured many such personalities like- Manda and Prakash Amte,Javed Akhtar and so on and was made into a book that was published by Samakaleen Prakashan, sister concern of Anubhav. Apart from Prakashwata- biography of Prakash Amte,Yanni Ghadawala Sahasrak (Those who made the millennium) a 600 pager,one-of-its- kinds books in Marathi and many more,Unique Features were the first ones to produce first ever Marathi Travel show- Bhatkanti.

With a recent series of books for educating children on governance in their cities,Kulkarni comments on venturing into multiple media,“The kaleidoscope of life is too big for one person to analyse. We believe in leaving no stone unturned, while exploring the world around us. And for that,we have no option but to reach out to masses, because after all, they are the world.”
