The Pune branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will conduct a public awareness programme on bronchial asthma on May 24 at Dr Nitu Mandke House,Tilak Road. The programme, which will start at 6 pm,will be preceded by a one-act play ‘Mulgi Zali Ho’,presented by staff of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.
Dr Nitin Abhyankar,Dr Sandeep Salvi and Dr Sampada Tambolkar will speak on the occasion,a statement issued by Dr Dilip Sarda, president of the city unit of IMA,said.
A study conducted by Chest Research Foundation says the prevalence of bronchial asthma is increasing in the city. “In order to decrease this rising trend,we need to make public aware of the causes, predisposing factors, ways and means of early interventions. IMA is planning to conduct more such programmes for health education,” Sarda said.
The statement also added that the IMA and Pune Society of Gastroenterology in collaboration with World Gastroenterology Organisation will observe May 29 as ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome Day’ to create awareness. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is characterised by recurrent abdominal pain and discomfort associated with altered bowel habits that include either constipation or loose motion. IBS is a problem affecting millions of individuals and exerting a significant influence on the quality of life. Yet,despite volumes and impact of IBS worldwide, the disease remains poorly understood by the medical community and general public alike,Sarda added in the statement.
