In a bid to encourage tree plantation, the administration has planned to set up nearly 300 nurseries in schools in the district.

The plan envisages housing nurseries in all the high schools in the villages. Zilla Parishad CEO Sanjiv Kumar said that all the education officers have been intimated about this initiative and have been told to ensure children’s participation in this drive.

“All plants will be taken care of by the children and funds for getting the plants and the necessary equipment will be sponsored by the respective gram panchayats. The villages in the surrounding areas will participate in this drive,’’ he said. With high schools participating in the drive, all children are expected to adopt plants and later the onus would be on the villagers,he added. Land has been allocated in the school compound for these nurseries. Meanwhile, with the state government allocating Rs 17.82 crore for beautification work of the Shivneri fort, the district administration has already spent Rs 15 crore in the construction work. At a recent meeting held by the Pune district guardian minister Ajit Pawar, the administration has been asked to speed up the work.
