All chips down!

According to recent US reports,a ‘food desert’ has been created among many metropolises in the country. And we too have fallen prey to it. The concept of food desert examines the citizen’s lack of access to healthy food and the subsequent barrenness which is created due to sameness in breakfasts,snack-ons and the drinks.

“The recent food developments are not health-supportive and restrain access to nutritious food,” says Chinmayie Bhat,a Bangalore-based nutritionist and an avid blogger on healthy food. “The super markets are the major reasons for such a health catastrophe.” Shalini C,a first year law student who is new to the city, minces no words; “The buying trends in the super markets are not health-friendly.” Shalini buys only chocolate biscuits, and junk food like chips and drinks.

“We are aware of the food desert which has been created by us,but we do keep several substitutes for preserved food and drinks,” says Sadakat Pirzade, the manager of a leading super market in town. The youth in and around the store comes often to buy soya and organic products and energy drinks. “Aerated drinks’ sale rise double-fold on weekends and during parties,” grins Pirzade. Juices cover about seven percent of weekly sales. The store has recently come up with the idea of stocking up soya biscuits, diet drinks, whole wheat breads, and multi-grained cereals to meet the demand of health conscious youngsters and to combat the upcoming barrenness in food choices. “It is utterly sad that we eat preserved food,” says Bhat, who blames our bad lifestyles and lazy routines for such actions. “We cannot think of cooking from scratch these days, even though it does not require much time.”

In spite of all the doom-saying,supermarkets are as avoidable while living in cities as concrete buildings. So we did some aisle hopping in supermarkets and decided to complie a list of the next best buys. Here is a modest list of items that could add some spots of fiber, vitamins and minerals into your everyday food. If you can’t avoid it,might as well settle for the lesser of the evils!
