‘AICTE mulls introducing yoga in curriculum’

To promote yoga in colleges,the University Grants Commission has announced grants. All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) is also taking steps to introduce it in curriculum,said Dr. Ved Prakash,UGC vice-chairman on Sunday.

He was addressing the sixth international conference on Yoga Research and Cultural Synthesis at Kaivalyadhama,Lonavala,which was inaugurated on Sunday.

More and more people are now turning to yoga from conventional therapies,observed experts assembled from various countries. Yogic experts across North America,South America,Europe and Asia were present at the conference.

“In the United States,more than 6 per cent of the Americans practice yoga. Most of the healthcare institutions and hospitals (in US) are having a separate department on yogic research. Yogic education is getting a fair amount of academic space in schools and colleges,” said Dr Sat Bir Khalsa of Harvard Medical School.

More than 1,200 delegates will participate in the week-long international conference. Participants are expected from countries including US,France,Brazil,China,Germany,Canada,Greece,Argentina,Korea and Japan.

Justice BN Srikrishna,former chief justice of the Supreme Court and chairman of the organising committee said,the international conference will help to exchange ideas on what levels yoga has reached the world over in transforming the lives of the people. “Yoga is a discipline,which utilises the power of concentration to inculcate physical and mental discipline. It can be used for healing,improve muscular power and also for meditation,” he said. Dider Mengou of Kaivalyadham France said the institute was started in 1981 with a single teacher. Today the institute boasts 60 teachers across France. Dr Alicia Souto,a researcher with Argentina University said Yoga is fast penetrating the minds and souls of the people of South American countries of Argentina and Brazil and is finding entry into medical research on topics such as anorexia.
