AFMC job racket busted,2 held

Woman promised job for Rs 2L; action based on Military Intelligence inputs

The city police Thursday busted an alleged job scam in which the racketeers took Rs 2 lakh from a woman after promising her a job as a nurse in the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). The police action was based specific inputs from the Pune unit of the Military Intelligence (southern command). Those involved also issued her a fake appointment letter. Some of them are related to the Army establishment.

The woman,Vaishali Sandeep Ambekar, filed a complaint at the Wanavdi police station on Thursday. The police have so far nabbed two persons Rahul Mohite and Nanda Shinde. Mohite is a gardener at the servant quarters in the AFMC. The Army is also probing the role of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the rank of Subedar and a few more persons who have been named by Mohite and Shinde.

Investigating Officer S N Hulwan said the woman is a resident of Ahmednagar and works as a nurse in a local hospital. “Two months ago,an auto driver,Tamboli, told her that he had connections in the Army area. He told Vaishali that he could help her get a job as nurse in the AFMC,” said Hulwan.

Tamboli introduced her to Mohite and Shinde. “The duo took Rs 2 lakh in installments from her and promised her the nurse’s job in AFMC. They also got her medical test conducted at some hospital and then they allegedly gave her a fake appointment letter on a bogus AFMC letterhead stating confirmation of service,” the police officer said.

The letter was issued in the name of Vaishali Sakaram Nagare, her maiden name. A copy of the letter is with the Newsline. It states that Vaishali has been appointed for the job from July 9 on a monthly pay of Rs 22,000.

The police said that on July 8 the suspects called her to Pune for a medical test. They took her Sassoon Hospital and then to a private hospital. This raised doubts in Vaishali’s mind and she got in touch with an Army officer. The officer told her that the appointment letter was fake.

The Pune unit of military intelligence probed and gave specific inputs to the Wanavadi police. A police team has been sent to nab Tamboli. “We doubt more persons are involved, which may include some attached to the Army establishments. The possibility that the racketeers could have cheated more people is being probed,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Manoj Patil.
