A Euphoric Journey

Lexicons define the word 'euphoria' as a feeling of great happiness or well being.

Euphoria, scheduled to perform in Pune on September 5,will now reach out to foreign audiences via an online documentary series on the band

Lexicons define the word ‘euphoria’ as a feeling of great happiness or well being. However, ever since this Delhi-based music group was formed, the word has now become synonymous with Indian rock. Euphoria, which launched way back in 1998,soon became a rage. Right from their catchy Dhoom Pichak Dhoom number to the more mellow Maeri and the latest CWG anthem, their music has won them a handsome fan following.

The band is looking forward to its performance in Pune on September 5 at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch in Swargate. Dr Palash Sen,lead vocalist, shares,“Our journey has been full of ups and downs. When we started out,it seemed pretty smooth, but we realised how difficult it is to keep a band together. And though most of the band has been together,we’ve still faced tough times.”

So,what genre does their music come under? “We call ourselves a ‘Hind rock’ band because all our songs are in Hindi and the musical arrangement is that of rock. And while we have been classified under many specific genres,we prefer to do a lot of different things,” says Sen.

The group is presently in the process of bringing out its fifth album, which will be completed by this November. Interestingly,a documentary series on the band’s journey is also in the offing. To be launched on Nyoo TV,which is an online social medium, the documentary will be web-cast in a series of 14 bi-weekly episodes, starting from September 17. Speaking about his expectations from the series,Sen says,“Over the years I have seen how the Internet has changed and I think it has great potential. I am sure this initiative will also help us reach out to audiences outside India.”

Sen has done his best keep the flavour of the band intact and Euphoria has reached out to audiences across the country with its peppy music and meaningful lyrics. Shares Sen,“We have played so prolifically over the years and not restricted ourselves to just providing music for films. This has helped us be what we started out to be.”

Recalling his favourite moments while playing on stage,Sen says,“I remember this one concert where we played with Pakistani band Junoon at the UN General Assembly right after the September 11 attacks in the US. It felt good to know that music is such a strong propagator of peace and there is so much strength in this medium.”
