A one-year-old girl and her mother were killed and seven persons injured after a heavy container went out of control, resulting in damage to eight vehicles that came in its way on Pune-Nagar road near Lonikand on Sunday. Two of the injured are reportedly critical. The Lonikand police have arrested the driver,Somnath Mulak (42),and brought him to the city for medical check-up.

The police said the driver of a ten-wheeler heavy container carrying steel angles that was coming to Pune from Nagar lost control over the vehicle in front of the old Zilla Parishad school around 10.15 am on Pune-Nagar Highway, about 30 km from Pune.

Sub-inspector R M Chavan, who is investigating the case, said,“The driver lost control and the container first hit a small pick-up tempo. The impact was such that the tempo was flung high above the ground and went on to hit a rickshaw and a bike on the opposite lane. The drivers escaped with minor injuries.” Chavan added,“The container then went on to hit a bike and injured the riders — Jitendra Salunke and wife Anita of Dighi. Jitendra is reportedly critical while Anita is out of danger. The vehicle then hit three members of a family who were standing by the roadside in front of a shop. A one-year-old girl,Priya, died on the spot while her mother Pratibha succumbed to injuries later. The father,Sundar Chavan,is under treatment.

The container went on to hit two motorcyclists,Ashok Dhore of Yerawada and Rajendra Karpe, who were on separate motorcycles. It also hit a jeep injuring one person travelling in it and hit two more bikes before swerving off the road and coming to a halt in a roadside pit. Details of the two other injured persons could not be ascertained.

Chavan said,“The driver has claimed that he faced a problem with the accelerator and had bent down to fix it. We will verify the claims. We have sent him to Sassoon General Hospital in Pune for medical test to find out whether he had consumed alcohol. A report from the regional transport office about the problem in the accelerator is awaited.”
