Two Covid-19 deaths were reported from Maharashtra of which one was an 81-year-old man who had hypertension and other co-morbidities including lung infection, state health department officials said Wednesday.
Another death – of a 75 year old man who had tested positive for Covid 19 – was reported in Sangli.
Meanwhile, 87 new Covid-19 cases were reported in the state Wednesday, according to the health department bulletin.
The 81-year-old man passed away on December 24 at Jehangir hospital and authorities reported the death to Pune Municipal Corporation. A Covid-19 test of the Pune resident had tested positive, hospital authorities said.
According to Jehangir hospital officials the patient who had sepsis was critical and had multi organ failure. He had tested positive for Covid 19 on December 22. The cause of his death was attributed to sepsis with multi organ failure and Covid infection.
He had taken both the doses of Covid vaccine and had chronic kidney disease state health authorities.
When contacted, Pune Municipal Corporation officials said that they have stepped up testing and more than 4,000 tests have been conducted since December 18.
So far, there are 36 persons with Covid-19 in Pune city with mild symptoms in home isolation.
According to Sangli district health officials a 75-year-old man from Miraj-Sangli who was admitted to a private hospital for treating a fracture developed a fever and tested positive for Covid-19 infection. He was admitted on December 18 and died on December 21. The death was reported on December 23, officials said.
As many as 10,864 tests were conducted Wednesday across the state and at present the dominant Covid variant is Omicron XBB.1.16.
As of Wednesday, there were 10 patients detected with JN.1 variant in the state, which has reported 267 Covid infections since December 21.
Mumbai has 103 active Covid cases, followed by 43 in Thane, 53 in Pune district, and 19 in Raigad.
Pune circle that includes Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune rural, Solapur city and rural and Satara has reported a total of 33,311 Covid-19 deaths till date since the Covid outbreak with more than 20.22 lakh persons infected with Covid-19.
Of these 20,639 deaths are from Pune district.
