When WTF! in Khar shut down overnight, almost a month ago, many continued to drive past the spot hoping the owners might have resolved their disagreements for the sake of its loyalists. But when its signboard was torn down, people reconciled to the fact that perhaps it wasnt meant to be.
We knew that a new place was slated to open in its place, but it was a bit unnerving to see it happen so soon. At first,it felt a little wrong to enter The Hungry Birds in Vora Building, near Khar station. The fact that the new pub has retained everything tables, chairs, wait staff, even the red booths on the inside put us at ease. Except for the posters in the outside section the one that had phrases such as Where Tiger Fornicates,Wheres The Fire and other variations of the letters WTF it seems like the new management has touched nothing. Even the loose toilet seats and the broken hand shower in the bathrooms havent been fixed.
The menu,in the same style as its predecessor, comprises drinks and cocktails in one laminated card, and starters on another. The prices have been retained too. But for those who love cocktails, the pub now offers interesting mixes such as Pomegranate and Basil Margarita,in addition to Orange Drill Mojito.
The food menu has been revamped almost entirely. Instead of Jesses Kerala Beef fry and Kheema Pav,we now have Beef Chilly Fry and Salli Kheema Parantha for non-vegetarians. In the vegetarian section, the Bombay Vada Pav has been knocked off, with Salli Pav Bhaji taking its place. The BBQ Chicken Wings beg to be devoured with a cold pint of beer, but on the plate, the texture is more fried than barbequed, and the taste of vinegar and rosemary overpowers everything else. The stuffed mushrooms,on the other hand, are cute to look at with their crispy outer layer. On the inside, theyre soft but piping hot,and filled with cheese and spinach. The Creole Cheese Spinach Wrap,a deep-fried variety, could do with less time in the frying pan. The best item on the menu, undoubtedly,is the Prawn Pop Corn. Served with a cup of mayonnaise, theyre tiny little bites that one can munch on.
Overall, the food is average. But the atmosphere is still just as chilled with better music world music as opposed to popular rock. For those accustomed to having WTF!,The Hungry Birds may just be able to pick up from where the former left off.
