A 60-year-old woman suffered a leg fracture and head injuries in an accident in Worli on Wednesday. The victim,Aparna Asgaonkar, was paying a taxi driver when a speeding car rammed into the taxi she had alighted from. The car driver was arrested by the police shortly after the accident.

The police said preliminary medical reports suggest that Santosh Desai, the driver of the car which rammed into the taxi, had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening. However, they added there was no confirmation yet on whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The accident took place near the signal on Dr Annie Besant Road in Worli, less than 100 metres from the Worli police station around 11 pm on Wednesday.

“Asgaonkar had stopped the taxi near her residence. She got out and was paying the driver when a Swift Dzire driven by Desai (36),a Worli resident, rammed into the taxi. The impact of the collision was such that the stationary taxi swerved to the side, and Asgaonkar was hit by it,” said senior police inspector Dipak Pawar of Worli police station.

Asgaonkar was taken to KEM Hospital by witnesses. Doctors at the civic-run hospital said Asgaonkar suffered a fracture to the leg as well as other wounds.

“The accident seems to have scraped her skin from her side. There were injuries to her head. She is being treated for her injuries and is being kept here for treatment,” said a doctor.

Meanwhile,Desai was arrested by the Worli police.

“We have booked him under Sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court and let off on a surety of Rs 5,000. We are awaiting blood sample reports to see if he was driving under the influence of alcohol,” said Pawar.
