The Western Railway Mumbai division has launched an advanced centralised monitoring system aiming to enhance the upkeep and maintenance of these crucial amenities that are bound to have an impact on commuter experience.
Under the new web-based GSM alert monitoring system tailored for lifts and escalators, the maintenance personnel receive real-time alerts whenever a lift or escalator malfunctions, allowing them to promptly attend to the issue. This proactive approach has been particularly effective in minimising disruptions caused by incidents such as unauthorized activation of emergency stop buttons by miscreants.
Additionally, a dedicated mobile application provides instant notifications to the staff and passengers in case of disruptions, ensuring swift resolution of issues.
Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, said that the new system not only optimises manpower but also promises significant benefits for passengers. “By streamlining operations and maintenance, the Railways aims to improve service reliability and minimize inconvenience caused by non-functional lifts or escalators,” he said.

In the previous fiscal year, the Western Railway commissioned nine new lifts and six escalators across various stations within its Mumbai Central Division. This expansion is part of ongoing efforts to enhance passenger facilities and ensure smoother transit experiences for the public.
The centralized monitoring system marks a pivotal step towards achieving these goals, offering a scalable solution for managing and maintaining critical infrastructure efficiently.
