Less than a week after recording the coldest day of the season in at least a decade, temperatures in Mumbai soared over the past week with the minimum temperature touching 22.9 degrees Celsius, nearly three degrees above normal, on Saturday morning. In some respite for the city, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast temperatures to dip to 16 degrees Celsius by December 12.
On November 30, the city woke up to its coldest day of the month since at least 2012 when minimum temperatures dipped to a low of 15.7 degrees Celsius. However, after recording below normal temperatures, Mumbai has recorded a significant spike in day and night temperatures over the past few days.
On Saturday morning, the Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 22.9 degrees, which is 3 degrees above normal, while the Colaba station logged 23.4 degrees. During the day, the maximum temperatures crossed 32 degrees in the suburbs as well as the island city division with the Colaba station recording highs of 32.5 degrees.
However, the IMD said that temperatures are set to record another dip in the coming week. In its five day forecast bulletin, the weather bureau said that minimum temperatures may experience a drop starting Monday (December 8), following which temperatures may further dip by nearly five degrees with lows of upto 16 degrees by December 12.
Meteorologists attribute the dip in temperatures during the month of December to the influx of northerly and North easterly winds.
