Days after giving an one-week ultimatum to the Congress over the Mumbai North-West seat, party’s former Mumbai chief Sanjay Nirupam will soon join Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, sources close to him confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Congress, Wednesday removed Nirupam from the list of star campaigners for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the state unit of the party also sent a proposal to the high command to take disciplinary action against him.

A source close to Nirupam told The Indian Express, “He has taken a decision to quit the Congress and wants to contest from a seat in Mumbai which is likely to be offered to him by Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde.”

Congress party, however, is looking to take strong action against Nirupam. “There will be no show cause notice to Nirupam. There will be direct action against him,” said state Congress chief Nana Patole.

Reacting to the development, Nirupam said, “Congress should not waste its energy and stationery on me. Party anyways is facing severe financial crunch and hence it should use its energy save the party. The one week ultimatum I had given is over and I will announce my decision tomorrow (Thursday).”

Nirupam was upset after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), an ally of the Congress, announced Amol Kirtikar as the candidate in Mumbai North West seat, which he wanted to contest.

“The leadership does not care about local leaders. Nobody had a talk with me in the last two weeks, nobody asked me if there was any alternative, nobody asked me why I want to contest this. At a time when Congress leadership is talking about extending Nyay (justice) to different sections of the society, it is not looking into the injustice committed against its own party workers. I want to tell the leadership that I will wait for one week. All options are open for me,” Nirupam had said.
