Dindoshi sessions judge S L Pathan Monday sentenced two persons to life for kidnapping five-year-old Karnit Shah from outside his Kandivili residence on April 6,2011. Shah was rescued 14 days later from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. Of the four persons arrested,Surjit Kumar Bin and Sameer Khan were sentenced to life, while Sandeep Waroshe and Sohanlal Gupta were acquitted for lack of evidence.
According to the prosecution,Gupta, who ran a confectionery shop near Karnits house, along with Khan,a delivery boy and two others kidnapped Karnit. While no ransom calls were made initially, the culprits saw advertisements put out by Karnits family and made a few calls, said police.
While arguing for Waroshe and Gupta, defence lawyer Santosh Deshpande said,In court,Karnit identified Sandeep. However,he was unable to say any thing beyond identifying him. Similarly, the prosecution failed to bring strong witnesses to establish Guptas role in the case.
Karnits father Anant Shah said he was satisfied with the courts judgement.
Anant,a stock broker, said his family was waiting for this day. The verdict has come as a pleasant surprise to us. He said his family fully cooperated with the police in every way.
More than 300 policemen worked to trace my child and without them,we would have lost Karnit forever, Anant said, who visited Kandivali police station to thank police officers after the judgement.
We had made the case watertight so the accused would not be spared, said inspector L G Shinde, the investigating officer of the case.
