Transit accommodations in poor state

Flats purchased by BMC to provide transit accommodation to people evicted from dilapidated buildings

Flats purchased by BMC to provide transit accommodation to people evicted from dilapidated buildings and affected by projects are languishing for lack of upkeep.

Residents of Kanchan Apartments,Borivali (West),where there are four such flats, said the corporation owed the housing society approximately Rs 4 lakh in maintenance charges. The civic estates department had bought the flats in the seven-storey building from Mhatre Builders 13 years ago.

Society secretary Camilo Fernandez said,“We have been sending BMC monthly maintenance and security bills. We are yet to receive a response.”

The residents have now approached R-North corporator Abhishek Ghosalkar of Shiv Sena for mediation.

The rooms have been allotted to four families living in 70 and 71 Mandvi Estate,Masjid West (B-ward),in South Mumbai. But the families are not willing to move in.

Fernandez said a family came to see the 250-square-feet flats a year ago,but soon left. “This is very far from their workplace and children’s school near south Bombay,” he said.

“The rooms are probably very dirty and infested with pigeons and pests. We have no access to the rooms and BMC is ignoring our efforts to contact it,” said Fernandez.

Ghosalkar said: “The residents approached me and I asked them to send a notice to the civic estates department. They were under the impression that the ward officer is in charge of paying maintenance charges but that is not true. The housing society will have to send BMC three notices for not paying charges, after which action can be taken. Generally, the corporation responds to such notices.”

He said Kanchan Apartments housing society had already issued two such notices.
