After the super success of Dabangg, talks of its sequel keep the excitement growing
During the recent festive weekend,Salman Khan swaggered on to the big screen as the corrupt cop Chulbul Pandey. Amidst catcalls and wolf-whistles,the actor walked right into an unprecedented opening, with Dabangg earning Rs 48.5 crore in the first weekend alone. The box-office rout the biggest ever in Indian cinematic history had the Dabangg team plotting to make its sequel even before it had completed its first week run.
Though the buzz around the sequel is massive, its director-writer Abhinav Kashyap is yet to zero in on a specific idea. I dont even know what my next script is going to be whether it would be a sequel or something else. The other day,we met at Salmans house and discussed different possibilities. One of them is moving the films location to a city like Mumbai, he states. However, the director is certain about a few things, like not leaving Sonu Sood out in the sequel, which will either be called Dabangg 2 or Robin Hood Pandey. As Chedi Singh,Sood garnered rave reviews. Clichéd as it may sound,we came up with a situation where Chedi Singhs twin comes into the picture, says Kashyap. Sood is mighty excited about the possible sequel and his role. I have even thought of a name for my character Ganpat Singh, he says excitedly.
The movie saw the birth of a star called Sonakshi Sinha, who too believes that it was the entire package that made Dabangg such a blockbuster. She is sure of the fun continuing in the sequel. Dabangg 2 is a long way from now but I wouldnt like to change anything about my character Rajo. The character didnt require me to dance in this film, but if need be in the sequel I will definitely be up for a longer jig.
In an earlier interview to this paper,Salman had predicted the movies success in his inimitable style. Its very different. Everyone will enjoy it. We have kept it simple, he had said. True to this philosophy, the sequel too is going to a simple, yet masala film, giving the Indian audience a break from experimental ventures. We made a movie just to entertain the masses and will carry this forward in the sequel, says Sood. After all despite the box-office clout that Salman enjoys, his superstardom is still rooted in the masses.
Producer Arbaaz Khan too realises this. It was the rootedness of the script that worked in its favour, apart from the character sketch of Chulbul Pandey. At some levels we get a certain character right. But Chulbul was perfect at every level. More than the cast and crew,it is the audience who wants us to make the sequel, says Arbaaz. The sequel will take at least two years to be ready because of Salmans prior commitments. However,I am not aiming to make it bigger or costlier than Dabangg, just better, he reveals.
Action director Vijayan who had also choreographed the fight sequences in Salman-starrer Wanted last year and cinematographer Mahesh Limaye too will join the task of making the sequel a success. I used a warmer palate for the rustic setting in Dabangg, says Limaye, who is now keen on experimenting with a newer tone for the sequel. Apart from them,Khan loyalists like music composer duo Sajid-Wajid will be adding more excitement to the sequel. The duo hopes that awards will finally pour in with Dabangg, while Lalit Pandit, whose Munni Badnaam Hui has made him the new item number king of Indian cinema,is hoping for a bigger presence in the next. In Dabangg, the story was to be carried forward through the music which had to be rustic but with a touch of urban element,so that it would have universal appeal, says Sajid. For the sequel,we can only promise that the sequel will hold a bigger surprise.
