Teachers! Wind beneath the Wings

"I can fly higher than an eagle,'cause you are the wind beneath my wings" are the words from Bette Midler's song "Wind beneath my wings" aptly fitting the occasion of Teachers’ Day in tribute to the immense contribution made by our teachers.

“I can fly higher than an eagle,’cause you are the wind beneath my wings” are the words from Bette Midler’s song “Wind beneath my wings” aptly fitting the occasion of Teachers’ Day in tribute to the immense contribution made by our teachers. Looking down the memory lane,I distinctly and fondly remember my teachers who have made a difference in my life and I humbly acknowledge their commitment and dedication to motivate and shape our lives helping us to fly high. I thank them for being the wind beneath my wings.

Teachers are the destiny shapers, the real nation builders whose life is a reflection of sacrifice, dedication and commitment. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan whose birth anniversary we celebrate today has rightly said,”The teacher’s place in society is of vital importance. He acts as the pivot for the transmission of intellectual traditions and technical skills from generation to generation and helps to keep the lamp of civilization burning.” Teachers are significant and valuable elements in society and I do agree with Jeannette Walls who has said that,”Teaching is a calling. And I’ve always thought that teachers in their way are holy – angels leading their flocks out of the darkness.” Every child is blessed with unlimited potential, and teachers can play the role of a catalyst transforming the child into a confident, secure citizen.

It is true that the role of a teacher has radically changed over the years. However the goal of education remains to lead every child “in The Way he/she should go and when he/ she is older” they shall not depart from it. In that the role of education seeks the overall development of children. In this light, education should not be seen merely as a process of transmission and transaction but it is to be a transformative learning process facilitating students to develop required skills that eventually will prepare them for higher education and life in general.

In this fast paced global economy, educators have the responsibility to create world class global citizens. Teachers, therefore have to focus on their subject matter expertise, cross disciplinary references, innovative methodology for interactive learning and above all their commitment to this noble profession. They have to be prepared to be able to meet the needs of students of varying abilities within the same classroom thus providing them a holistic learning experience. It is also incumbent upon the educator as far as possible be a good role model in and out of the classroom.

On this Teachers’ Day,I urge all teachers to rededicate themselves for the cause of education with a passion to empower the young generation. Remember that God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10). God will reward your sincere hard work.
