Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee,Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan,Chandrayan project head Mylswamy Annadurai and Sanskrit scholar Satyavrat Shastri were conferred the South Indian Education Societys 12th National Eminence Awards on Friday. The award function was attended by Kanchi Sankaracharya Kamakoti Jayendra Saraswati.
Somnath Chatterjee has won the award for excellence in public leadership. Chatterjee has overcome political divide and supported what was right for the nations democracy during the Indo-US nuclear deal debate in the Parliament. He did not mind getting expelled from his party to uphold his duty as the speaker of Lok Sabha, said R Chidambaran,principal scientific advisor to the Prime Minister.
E Sreedharan,who is known for his contribution as the chief engineer of the Konkan railway project and the Delhi Metro,was conferred the award for excellence in community leadership. Accepting the award,Sreedharan said,Both the 750-km long Konkan railway line and the 65-km Delhi Metro were completed before the stipulated time and within the allotted budget. I accept this award on behalf of my team of assistants,engineers and workers.
Mylswani Anndurai,project head of Chandrayaan,was conferred the award for his distinction in the field of science and technology category.
Chandrayan is not just Indias first scientific mission to the moon but also a symbol of what India can achieve in the field of aeronautics in the future,Annadurai said.
Satya Vrat Shastri,head of Sanskrit department in JNU and Delhi University was conferred the award for his contribution to the language and culture.
India has to revive its respect for the Sanskrit language. We should know that most languages of the world have evolved from this great language, Shastri said.
