Special court hearing the Sheena Bora murder case. (Representational)
THE SPECIAL court hearing the Sheena Bora murder case has directed that accused-turned approver Shyamvar Rai be produced before it next week.
The court was hearing an application by Rai, who has been behind bars since August 2015, again seeking that his application for bail be heard and decided upon. While he had filed for bail in March, the CBI is yet to file a reply on his application.
Special Judge J C Jagdale directed the authorities of the Thane jail, where Rai is lodged, to ensure that he is produced before the court next week. Rai, formerly employed as a driver with Sheena murder case accused Indrani and Peter Mukerjea — the mother and stepfather of the deceased — was arrested on August 21, 2015 after he was found with an unlicensed fire weapon. The police had claimed that during interrogation, he had revealed that he was involved in the alleged abduction and murder of Sheena on April 24, 2012.
Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna were then arrested by the Khar police and Peter was subsequently arrested by the CBI in November 2015. Rai, in April 2016, had sought to be a prosecution witness in the case for the CBI by becoming an approver. In July last year, he began his deposition implicating the three accused. It was concluded in February this year. In his bail plea filed in March, Rai had said that his family is facing financial difficulties since he is the only earning member.
Even as the Indrani, Peter and Sanjeev have been produced before the court for trial, Rai had since he turned an approver and has not been brought to the court.
On Thursday, Indrani, too, approached the court asking whether a decision has been taken on the bail plea she filed earlier this month.
