Sena scores first: ‘opens’ flyover, gives it 26/11 hero’s name

The Shiv Sena sought to upstage the government on Wednesday by “inaugurating” the Navghar Flyover in Mulund (East) ahead of schedule and naming it after a person of its choice.

The Shiv Sena sought to upstage the government on Wednesday by “inaugurating” the Navghar Flyover in Mulund (East) ahead of schedule and naming it after a person of its choice.

Still seething at the government decision to name the Bandra-Worli Sea Link after Rajiv Gandhi,a group of about 50 Sainiks staged the inauguration at one of the flyover’s lanes and named it after policeman Prakash More, who had died fighting terrorists at Cama and Albless Hospital on 26/11.

“The flyover was ready but the government and its ministers have no time to inaugurate it. So,we not only inaugurated it but also named it after martyr Prakash More,” said Prabhakar Shinde, local Sena corporator.

“We would have thrown open the flyover to the public without any fanfare,” said Dilip Kawathkar,MMRDA’s joint director (public relations).

More,47,was a sub-inspector with the Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station and was in ACP Sadanand Date’s team. He lived near Rashtrathi Complex, near the flyover. The Sena is upset about the choice of Rajiv’s name for the flyover, saying the government it had led had decided to name it after freedom fighter Veer Savarkar.

The flyover is at the key Navghar Junction,a square on the Eastern Express Highway. It connects MHADA Colony at Mulund (East) to Mulund (West) railway station.

The Rs 12.49-crore flyover has been built under MMRDA’s Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project. “The conflicting traffic movements at this junction often restrict the traffic on the Eastern Express Highway.
