The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has alleged that the Shiv Sena had played a strong role in backing the proposed water tariff hike and property tax hike which is facing strong political opposition, cutting across party lines. MNS corporator and standing committee member Dilip Lande said,It seems the Shiv Sena is only opposing the proposal in name. How come the BMC did not propose this hike before elections but waited until after elections to announce the increase in water tariff and property taxes?
If one wants to increase revenue of the corporation, there are many other ways such as recovering the Rs 1,500 crore debt from the state government.
Also, while the increase in water charges and property taxes are ultimately going to affect the common man,the civic administration has been a mute spectator of the nexus between the water mafia and the civic officials in the business of water tankers, alleged Lande. MNS leaders have written to municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar and Mayor Sunil Prabhu demanding that the proposals be taken back from the standing committee.
