Scanty rainfall in city

Despite the Met department expecting occasional showers on Monday, the city remained dry with Santacruz and Colaba weather stations recording negligible rainfall.

Despite the Met department expecting occasional showers on Monday, the city remained dry with Santacruz and Colaba weather stations recording negligible rainfall.

After receiving the highest 24-hour rainfall of the season – 82.8mm between Saturday and Sunday morning in the suburbs – the city was expected to receive good rainfall on Monday. But the Colaba weather station recorded only 0.2 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm,while Santacruz recorded negligible rain.

“We had expected to receive occasional spells of rain under the influence of the low pressure area which on Sunday was over Chattisgarh and adjoining areas. However, the weather system started moving northwest, away from Maharashtra, and now lies over north Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas, due to which we have been experiencing scanty rainfall,” said Ajay Kumar,Director,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Maximum temperatures on Monday saw a rise – recording 31 degrees,up from 29 degrees the previous day – while the suburbs recorded 30.6 degrees,up from 29.6 degrees the previous day.

Weathermen expect only a few spells of rain in parts of city and suburbs on Tuesday. “There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over Gujarat, but it will not affect the state. We are expecting only light to moderate rain in the city on Tuesday,” Kumar added.
