Rubina Ali,the child artiste who came under the spotlight with her performance in Slumdog Millionaire, will be moving to her new house in Bandra (West) within a month. A flat has been identified on Bazaar Road, but some finishing has to be done, said her father Rafiq Qureshi. The family had lost their home in the Garib Nagar fire.
The flats for Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina were identified and paid for by a trust set up for the duo soon after the movie released. Azharuddin moved out of the Garib Nagar slum into his home some time last year.
Someone should come and help us rebuild our houses. Even if I move to our new house,my neighbours should also get new houses here, said Rubina. Until then, she has to cope with sleepless nights in the half burnt house of a neighbour. There are a lot of mosquitoes here. At least when we had our homes,we could switch on the fan and the mosquitoes would go away, said Rubina.
Most of the awards and momentos she received following her performance as a young Latika in the movie were destroyed in the blaze. I was very sad that all my awards were burnt. We could only dig out a half-burnt momento I received at the Oscars. That was my most precious award,as it had made me very proud and won me international acclaim, said Rubina.
The Class III student will return to school once things settle down. Her favourite English teacher called on Monday and sent dal-chawal and biscuits, said Rubina, who shifted from an Urdu-medium school last year. Shes nursing one minor grouse, though. Azhar who stays nearby has not come to visit me.
