RPF personnel demanded money,thrashed us when we refused,say passengers

Four passengers were allegedly beaten by three Railway Protection Force personnel after they refused to hand over Rs 500 in order to get seats in the Bhagalpur Express at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on Sunday morning.

Four passengers were allegedly beaten by three Railway Protection Force personnel after they refused to hand over Rs 500 in order to get seats in the Bhagalpur Express at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on Sunday morning. An FIR has been lodged against the RPF staff.

According police sources,the complainant,28-year-old Shahnawaz Mohammed Bashir Sheikh,was standing with his three brothers in a queue especially arranged for general compartment of Bhagalpur Express (train no 2336) which departs at 7.45 am. At around 6.30 am three RPF personnel demanded Rs 100 from each passenger. They also asked for Rs 400 from Shahnawaz. Other victims include Mohd Imran Qasim Sheikh( 30),Abdulrahman Qasim Sheikh (21) and Rehan Mohd Qasim Sheikh (38). While Shahnawaz sustained major injuries the others have minor injuries on their hands.

In the FIR Shahnawaz has blamed the RPF men and said that when he asked the personnel why he should give them money they started beating him and his brothers with wooden rods. When the passengers protested,the men took them to a yard near the parcel house and again assaulted them. In his FIR,Shahnawaz has named a constable and two officers.

According to police sources at Kurla terminus,all injured were treated at Bhabha Hospital,Kurla. They lodged an FIR against thee RPF men under section 384,323,324 and 34 of Indian Penal Code (which deals with demanding bribe,beating and combined crime). Nobody has been arrested so far.

SC Parhi,Senior Divisional Security Commissioner RPF,CR said,“At present nothing can be said. The passengers are saying that they were beaten for not giving Rs 500 to RPF personnel. However,the RPF staff said that they took the action to prevent them from breaking the queue. Beating the passengers cannot be tolerated.”
